The Baltimore Orioles return to the World Series after their disappointment in the 1969 Fall Classic. Boog Powell led the Orioles throughout 1970, winning the AL MVP Award. The Orioles defeated the Minnesota Twins in the ALCS. The Orioles faced the Cincinnati Reds who returned to the postseason for the first time since 1961. Johnny Bench led the Reds, winning the NL MVP Award. Bench and the Reds, however, were no match for the Orioles and Baltimore took it in 5 games. The Pittsburgh Pirates won the NL East over the Chicago Cubs by 5.0 games. The Reds finished well ahead of the Dodgers in the West. In the American League East, the Orioles finished ahead of the Yankees while the Twins beat the young, up and coming A’s in the West. Minnesota’s Jim Perry won the AL Cy Young Award while Bob Gibson took it in the National League. Thurman Munson was named AL Rookie of the Year while Carl Morton win if in the National League. Both the Reds and Pirates moved into new stadiums during the season as the wave of multi-purpose massive concrete structures replaced older ballparks. Baseball returned to Milwaukee as the baseball experiment in Seattle lasted only one year and the Seattle Pilots became the Milwaukee Brewers.
