The Oakland A’s win their first World Series since 1974. The World Series was eventful more for the catastrophic Bay Area earthquake than sweep of the San Francisco Giants by the A’s. Leading into the series there was tremendous buzz all throughout Northern California. The A’s took the first two games in Oakland. The Game 3 pregame festivities were abruptly interrupted by a 6.9 magnitude earthquake. It was tragic for the Bay Area and the World Series took a back seat for nearly two weeks. When play resumed, the A’s finished off the Giants having outscored them 33-14 over the 4 games. The A’s were dominate in 1989, even with injuries to Jose Canseco and Walt Weiss. The A’s did pick up Rickey Henderson to fill the void and won the AL West by 7.0 games over Kansas City. The Toronto Blue Jays won the AL East but just narrowly, holding off the Baltimore Orioles by 2.0 games. The Orioles, in the doldrums for most of the 80’s made a gallant run at the Blue Jays who opened the SkyDome in June. In the National League, the San Francisco Giants held off the San Diego Padres behind MVP Kevin Mitchell. In the NL East, the surprising Chicago Cubs behind Rookie of the Year Jerome Walton took the division crown. Mark Davis won the NL Cy Young Award while Bret Saberhagen won the AL award. Robin Yount won the AL MVP Award and Gregg Olson took home Rookie of the Year. Surprising teams and tight races provided the 1989 MLB season with plenty of excitement and drama. Relive it all with Dugout Steps Baseball and the 1989 Season Set.
