The 2001 Major League Baseball season was filled with a myriad of emotions.  Fresh off of a Subway Series the year before, the New York Yankees were looking to expand the Evil Empire.  Balls were flying out of the parks as Barry Bonds and Sammy Sosa waged war on Mark McGwire's Home Run record, just three years old.  A powerful pitching duo in Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling brought the Snakes a lot of bite in the desert. The Seattle Mariners shocked the baseball world by winning 116 games.  They were good in 2000 but nobody could have predicted that win total, led by the sweet swinging Ichiro Suzuki.  Moneyball was working it's magic in Oakland as a trio of outstanding young starters were the backbone for the A's, with Mark Mulder winning 21 games and Tim Hudson and Barry Zito winning 18 and 17 as well - all 25 years old or younger.  Albert Pujols was on fire in the National League for the Cardinals.  But, on September 11, 2001, the nation held it's breathe in shock and mourning, suffering a terrible terrorist attack.  Even baseball paused with the grieving nation.  Just one week later, however, the boys of summer would bring the nation relief by playing a game.  The American League featured powerful teams in the Mariners, Yankees, Indians and A's while the National League witnessed red-hot pennant races all the way to the wire.  In the NL East, the Phillies challenged the Braves.  In the Central, the Astros and the Cardinals tied, while in the West the Giants and the powerful bat of Barry Bonds chased the Diamondbacks all the way to the finish.  The Postseason was tremendous.  In the American League, the Yankees beat a very tough Oakland team and followed that up with an ACLS win over the Mariners.  In the National League, Arizona outlasted the Cardinals and then dispatched the Braves in the NLCS.  The World Series was set.  The greatest baseball franchise ever against a team just three years old.  The World Series didn't disappoint.  Four of the games were decided by a single run.  Two of the games went into extra innings and game seven was filled to the brim with drama.  Leading 2-1 going into the bottom of the 9th, the Yankees had future Hall of Famer Mariano Rivera on the mound - a near lock to save it.  The Diamondbacks conjured up some magic, however, and Luis Gonzalez delivered a game winning hit and the Diamondbacks were World Series champions.  The visuals of 2001 bring back many different memories and emotions.  Baseball was great . . . so great, it helped begin to heal a nation.   Relive it all with Dugout Steps Baseball and the 2001 Season Set.
